A press release from NHS Hull recently announced a £10 million investment in jobs and training in Hull:

ONE HULL has announced the first of a series of initiatives totalling nearly £10m in the first year to continue its focus on worklessness, employment, skills and training of future workforces, with the aim of ensuring the City is in a better position than most to respond to economic recovery.

The areas of focus around the earning and learning agenda include:

o Targeting those not in employment, education or training
o Providing further training and employment opportunities
o Challenging attitudinal issues to employment and claiming benefits

Local businessman Tony Cosgrove, a business sector representative on the Executive Group of ONE HULL, said: "We need to assess how a number of factors will impact on the learning and skills work, as well as the threat of further or potential job losses.

"This means continuing to map out resources and looking at how schemes can complement rather than compete with each other across the City."

Mr Cosgrove said efforts to prepare future workforces and change attitudes to work will continue.

He added: "We need to continue to evaluate the present economic situation, but we also need to keep a focus on skills and training to ensure this City will be in a better position than most to respond to the economic recovery and upturn."

Previous projects funded and supported through ONE HULL have included ‘Job Shops', offering advice and guidance to people looking to access employment and training within Hull and City Works, which has successfully placed over 1,000 local people into work at the St Stephen's retail and leisure development on Ferensway, in Hull.

ONE HULL is Hull's Local Strategic Partnership (LSP), which brings together the public, private, voluntary and community sectors to create a better City.
